How Does Acupuncture Work?
When people learn I am an acupuncturist, I often get these questions:
- How does acupuncture work?
- Is it painful? It seems scary
The Truth Is Acupuncture Should Not Be Painful!
Acupuncture works by utilizing acupressure points along the mapped out meridian channels, we call this acu-anatomy. Each channel correlates with a different part of the body.
When we feel pain in the body from injury or stress, accumulation can occur along the muscle or meridian pathway.
Where there is stagnation, there is pain. Just like when you get a massage and they find a tight knot, the pressure applied helps to relieve the discomfort, this is similar to how acupuncture works.
Despite common belief, the acupuncture needles are relatively painless. They typically are as thin as a strand of hair and unlike other medical needles used for injections, they are not hollow.
The needles are made of surgical stainless steel and are sterile and safe for each patient. They are not dipped in medicine or injecting anything into the body. They are simply releasing the stuck pressure and reminding the body how to heal naturally.

My secret disclosure: I am scared of the dentist, but that doesn’t stop me from getting my teeth cleaned twice a year!
Consider acupuncture flossing for your nervous system. You don’t need to have a major problem to receive the healing benefits of acupuncture.
Some of my favorite easy to read books on the subject:
